Recently I noticed a trend when reviewing resumes I received after posting an open requisition. I noticed that many of the objectives I read failed to match the position the candidate applied to. That got me thinking, how many times do candidates fail to tailor their resume before hitting the send button? I began asking some of my top clients if they have noticed this trend and indeed they have. In fact, many I asked responded by stating that they have ruled out candidates’ because of an objective that failed to come close to matching their opening.
Let me share some of the job objectives on resumes I recently received:
We are not a law firm, a medical office or a public accounting firm. I do not want to teach someone skills. I want to hire them!
If you have information on the position(s) you are applying for, CUSTOMIZE your objective to fit the position you are seeking. If you do not have this information, either write a very general job objective or take it off your resume. Incorrect or misdirecting job objectives are a major SCREENING tool for hiring authorities. Your job is to get the interview – don’t allow your resume to screen you out!
