The Truth Shall Set You Free

Shaun Enders

When you are conducting a job search you cannot misrepresent the truth.  Your resume must contain exact dates, an accurate description of your responsibilities and stress the accomplishments you have achieved.  If an employer finds any inconsistencies in your resume or application when they conduct a background check, they will determine you are not trustworthy.  At that point you are no longer a contender for the position.

There is no such thing as a “white lie” when you are in a job search.  Don’t compromise your integrity and stick to facts.  I’ve often been asked if you should customize your resume for different types of opportunities you are considering.  If you want to customize your job objective that is acceptable, just don’t alter facts.

You must also realize that if you misrepresent education or experience, you can be terminated at any point the company discovers the truth.  Don’t jeopardize your future – stick to the facts and show your prospective employer the assets you offer.  If you combine that with a high level of confidence in your ability to do the job and display a strong level of interest, you dramatically increase your chances of a job offer.  It goes back to the lesson we were taught by most of our mothers, “Honesty is always the best policy!”
